Remember the days when you wished you were older?
My daughter referred to herself last night as 7 ¼. Meticulously accounting her age, like a first-time parent who says their child is 32 months old.
(Your son is almost 3 ma’am, just say THREE!!!! I’d settle for 2 ½. Just please don’t make me do the math.)
Today is my birthday.
Today I am 36, or if you like, 432 months old.
A range of emotions and inner chatter ensue on this auspicious day.
“Is this the age I should stop shopping in the juniors department (NAH!),
…putting skittles in my popcorn (don’t judge, it’s amazing!),
…or sitting on my knees in a chair (it’s starting to hurt anyway)?”
Last year was a wake-up call. The five years before had flown by, and now 40 seemed just a hop skip and a jump away.
Ah, Forty, the age I have deemed when I will have “it all” figured out. When the switch flips, and I am a real adult. My big girl age, like 10 to my 7 ¼-year-old daughter.
May seem like pressure, but I see it as motivation.
I have accomplished more in this past year, than the 34 before it. How, you ask? By asking myself these 8 questions every day.
When I wake up I ask…
-
What is my goal today?
-
What is the reward when I achieve this goal?
-
What 5 things will I do to feel good today?
-
What 5 things am I grateful for?
Before I go to bed I ask…
-
What are the 3 victories of the day?
-
What 3 things did I learn today?
-
What 3 things did I do for myself?
-
What 3 things did I do for someone else?
These 8 little questions have kept me accountable and changed my life. I have kept a daily journal of my answers and love to flip through to see all of the little steps that have made up significant accomplishments in only 1 year’s time –
…finished my first half marathon, started a blog, earned my Certificate in Meetings Management (CMM), learned to sew, started religiously volunteering at a retirement community – BINGO!, learned to meditate, learned how use both Instagram and Facebook, went on my first hot air balloon ride, traveled to Miami, Orlando, Amelia Island, Charleston, Napa, Las Vegas, Belgium….and the list goes on.
Thank you 35 year old me. The best gift I could give myself. I wouldn’t claim I am wishing to be older, hardly, but I am not afraid of it.
Now, I challenge you to try it. Here is a free printable to get started!
